Women's lacrosse hosts tourney

The ASU women's lacrosse team begins its 2007 season this weekend when it hosts the annual Cactus Classic.

The tournament will be held at the SRC Fields from Friday night to Sunday afternoon and will feature Santa Clara, California-Santa Barbara, UA, Colorado State, Michigan State, Brigham Young, Rhode Island and ASU. Each team will play four games throughout the weekend.

The Sun Devils kick off the tournament when they face Santa Clara on Friday at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the team will face Michigan State at 10:30 a.m. and then Brigham Young at 2 p.m.

The Sun Devils conclude the tournament when they face UCSB on Sunday at noon in what the team feels will be its toughest game of the weekend.

"[UCSB has] been to Nationals the past few years and they've been ranked No. 1 in the past," team captain Keely McCarthy said. "We're really gunning for them."

The Sun Devils believe that teamwork and ball movement will be the keys to having a successful run in the tournament.

"[We need to connect] together in the open field," McCarthy said. "We need to go down on offense and just move the ball a lot so we can get open for ourselves and get our teammates open for some shots."

Despite the fact that the team will be playing four games in three days, it believes it is prepared and has what it takes to win all its matches.

"I expect us to perform really well," McCarthy said. "We have come a long way since the beginning of the semester. We just want to win all of them. That's our expectation."
