14 Devils ready for NCAA Indoors


The ASU track & field team will send 14 athletes to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend to compete in the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

On the women's side, senior Amy Hastings and junior Jacquelyn Johnson will both look to defend their 2006 titles in the 5,000m run and the pentathlon, respectively.

Hastings currently ranks first in the event with a record-setting time of 15:30.17 and Johnson ranks third in the multi-event with a score of 4,159 points.

Hastings will also compete in the 3,000m run, where she currently ranks 7th with a time of 9:13.28.

Johnson will also compete in the 4x400 relay along with senior Bridgette Williams, sophomore Shauntel Elcock and senior Latosha Wallace. The foursome is currently ranked 11th in the nation.

Two other Sun Devils will also compete in the 5,000m run this weekend.

Sophomore Jenna Kingma ranks 12th in the event with a time of 16:14.12 and freshman Ali Kielty ranks 13th with a time of 16:14.67.

In the throws, sophomore Sarah Stevens and junior Jessica Pressley will be competing in both events.

Stevens ranks No. 1 in the shot put with a mark of 17.86m and is tied for 3rd in the weight throw with a mark of 21.16m.

Pressley is ranked 7th in the shot put with a mark of 16.78m and 12th in the weight throw with a mark of 20.30m.

April Kubishta will compete in the pole vault this weekend, where her clearance of 4.30m currently ranks No. 1 in the nation.

On the men's side, freshman Ryan Whiting will be competing in the shot put, where his mark of 19.89m is currently 2nd in the nation.

Junior Matt Turner will compete in the long jump this weekend in which he ranks 11th with a mark of 7.72m.

Junior Joshua Kinnaman will compete in the heptathlon where his score of 5,585 points ranks 11th nationally.

The final competitor for the Sun Devils this weekend will be Aaron Aguayo, who barely squeaked into the 3,000m competition by placing 15th out of 15 with a time of 7:56.97.

The 2007 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday in the Randal Tyson Track Center.
