Devils qualify more athletes for nationals


Several members of the ASU track and field team tried to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend when they competed in the Last Chance Qualifying meets in Seattle and Ames, Iowa.

In Seattle, sophomore Jenna Kingma and freshman Ali Kielty provisionally qualified for the national meet in the 5,000m and finished second and third in the event with times of 16:14.12 and 16:14.67, respectively. Both times currently rank in the top 15 in the nation.

Senior Jessie McLaughlin provisionally qualified for the national meet and finished fourth in the mile with a time of 4:45.90.

In the long jump, sophomore Stephanie Garnett placed third and junior Jacquelyn Johnson placed fourth with marks of 6.06m (19-10.75) and 5.50m (19-05.00), respectively.

Johnson also placed second in the high jump with a clearance of 1.68m (5-6.00).

Senior Domenik Peterson ran a 47.27 in the 400m, which was just 0.02 seconds away from provisionally qualifying him for the national meet.

In Ames, senior Latosha Wallace finished fourth and improved her provisional status in the 400m with a time of 53.62. Sophomore Shauntel Elcock and senior Bridgette Williams finished 12th and 13th in the event with times of 55.77 and 55.87, respectively.

The women's 4x400 relay team of Wallace, Elcock, Williams and sophomore D'Metra Macedon also provisionally qualified for the national meet with a time of 3:39.72.

The NCAA will release the list of accepted marks for the national meet Monday. The athletes will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend.
