Track teams split up

The ASU track and field team will split up this weekend to compete in a pair of road meets.

The Sun Devils will send 14 members of the distance team to Palo Alto, Calif., to participate in the Stanford Invitational, while 39 other members of the team will travel down south to Tucson for the Arizona International.

The meets should give the Sun Devils a better idea of what type of team they have since it is still early in the outdoor season.

"We'll know a lot more about our team this weekend with our distance runners going to Stanford," coach Greg Kraft said. "We're excited to see Kyle Alcorn run his first steeple of the season, and every time [Amy Hastings] steps on the track, that's exciting as well."

At the Arizona International, the Sun Devils will run a different combination in the women's 4x100 relay. The men's 4x100 relay team will also compete for the first time.

However, the men's 4x100 relay team will be without freshman Rodney Glass, who is in the middle of spring football practice.

"Obviously, we would like to have Rodney Glass off the top," Kraft said. "But the other guys need to practice the stick and we need to be prepared not to have Rodney for the Pac-10 meet as well."

While the Sun Devils have already posted 25 marks that are good enough to qualify for the regional meet, those athletes are still looking to work on technique and improve those marks.

"Right now it's just working on our technical stuff, and we're not too worried about the distance anymore," sophomore thrower Sarah Stevens said. "The day of the meet, it's just one of those things you have to take the technique you have and go out there and see what you do with it and kind of step up to the pressure."

Kraft is also looking for the athletes that have not yet qualified for regionals to join that category.

"Our stars are superstars," Kraft said. "We're just looking for the other kids to elevate the game a little."
