Devils crush inter-state rivals at home

The ASU track and field team ended its regular season in a sprint Saturday when both the men's and women's teams defeated UA and NAU in the Double Dual at Sun Angel Stadium.

The No. 1 women's team beat UA by a score of 115-80 and NAU by a score of 133-57, while the No. 6 men's team beat UA by a score of 110-86 and NAU by a score of 134-59.

Overall, the Sun Devils won a total of 24 events and picked up 32 regional qualifiers in the team's final meet before the Pac-10 Championships.

Junior Matt Turner led the men's team. He won the long jump with a regional qualifying mark of 7.76 meters (25-05.50) and the high jump with a regional qualifying clearance of 2.21 meters (7-03.00).

His high jump mark was also the fourth-best in ASU history.

The Sun Devil men also got a pair of victories from senior Domenik Peterson - who won both the 100-meter dash (10.48) and the 200-meter dash (20.70) in the final home meet of his career - and junior Marquis Profit, who won both the 110-meter hurdles (14.35) and the 400-meter hurdles (51.77).

Other Sun Devils picked up wins as well.

Freshman Justin Kremer won the 400-meter dash (47.46), junior Kyle Alcorn won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:08.48), and redshirt freshman Ryan Whiting won the shot put (20.35m 66-09.25).

Junior Tomas Navarro picked up a win in the hammer (51.15m, 190-09), junior Brad Roth in the javelin (68.19m, 226-01), and the 4x100 relay team of junior Duen White, Peterson, Kremer and junior Kelvin Love (39.61) won its event as well.

The 4x400 relay team of Kremer, senior Jimmie Gordon, Profit and Peterson was also victorious.

ASU coach Greg Kraft said he was impressed with the way the men's team performed.

"The 4x100 was real crisp, we got that around," Kraft said. "It was really nice to get Rodney Glass out here running the 100 - that was a good effort. Dom looked really good doing his thing."

On the women's side, sophomore Sarah Stevens captured two victories, when she won the hammer with a regional qualifying toss of 65.31 meters (214-03) and the discus with a regional qualifying toss of 55.79 meters (183-00).

Other women who won events were sophomore Shauntel Elcock in the 400-meter dash (53.85), freshman Kari Hardt in the 800-meter run (2:09.89), and freshman Krystal Duke in the 5,000-meter run (17:01.07).

Freshman Jasmine Chaney came out on top in the 100-meter hurdles (13.99), senior Latosha Wallace in the 400-meter hurdles (57.01), senior Anna Masinelli in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:30.46) and junior Jessica Pressley in the shot put (18.16m, 59-07.00).

The 4x100 relay team of senior Latoya Imadiyi, senior Bridgette Williams, junior Jordan Durham and Elcock (45.42) won its event and the 4x400 relay team of Williams, Elcock, Durham, and Wallace (3:36.92) also won.

The Sun Devils will now look ahead to the championship season and will send three athletes to compete in the Pac-10 Championships Multi-Events this weekend.

"It's at the point of the season that the championships are here, and we're just ready to do it," Kraft said. "You're kind of tired of waiting around, you're tired of training, you just want to go and do it."
