New officers to head advisory group

The Student Government Advisory Board (SGAB) announced its new officers for the 2008-2009 school year Monday and started discussing the preliminaries regarding a downtown constitution, SGAB members said.

This summer, the current positions, including head chair, will be abdicated, and the new officials will be faced with tasks set out by the previous government, such as installing a new downtown constitution, public programs senior Rene Sanchez said.

Aaron Davis, undeclared freshman, will replace Shelley Fassett, public works graduate, June 30 as SGAB chair, public program senior Matt Besenfelder said.

"He puts his heart into everything that he does," Fassett said. "He's not afraid of talking to people, which is what we need - an advocate for the students."

Also, liberal arts freshman Ashley Sherman will take on the role of administrative aid. However, the student group is still in need of a financier, Besenfelder said.

Fassett said the new downtown constitution could "be in play" for the 2008-2009 year.

"If something were to happen, and we couldn't get it written, we could give it another year," Fassett said.

With programs such as the Walter Cronkite School of Mass Communication moving downtown, the student group needs to fulfill the needs of the growing campus, Sanchez said.

This past year the SGAB received $10,000, but is looking to get an additional $10,000 this coming year, Sanchez said.

As for other concerns, the group looks to boost attendance and student interest.
