ASU fires away, comes up empty

The ASU women's soccer team suffered its second straight 1-0 loss Tuesday night when it fell to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Sun Devils (4-4-0) could not capitalize on their 22 shots and were unable to get the win without ASU coach Kevin Boyd on the sideline.

Boyd did not make the trip to Albuquerque in order to stay at home with his girlfriend, who gave birth to their daughter Tuesday morning.

UNM was led by a stellar performance from sophomore goalkeeper Kiani Wong, who made nine saves in the shutout for the Lobos.

It was the third time the Sun Devils have been shut out this season.

UNM grabbed the lead in the 24th minute when freshman forward Alexis Ball scored her third goal of the season from the right wing off a pass from junior defender Krista Peterson.

The Sun Devils had their chances to score in the first half as they took nine shots, but they could not answer and went into the locker room trailing 1-0.

Wong made six saves in the first half for the Lobos.

That first half goal was all the Lobos would need as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half despite the fact that the Sun Devils added 13 more shots to their total.

Five Sun Devils had three shots in the game, including junior defender Kylla Sjoman, senior forward/midfielder Alissa Oldenkamp, sophomore midfielder Carly Kallas, senior forward Courtney Crane and freshman midfielder Alexandra Elston.

The Sun Devils' trend of dominating their opponent on paper continued Tuesday as they recorded 22 shots to UNM's nine and had seven corner kicks to the Lobos' two.

But the Lobos won the battle of the only stat that matters: goals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Briana Silvestri made two saves in the loss for ASU.
