FLYING WALL: Junior defender Kylla Sjoman moves to block a goal attempt by San Diego forward Jen Mello at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium Sunday. San Diego defeated the Sun Devils 1-0.

The ASU women's soccer team could not break through again against a ranked team as it lost 1-0 to No. 19 San Diego at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium on Sunday.

It was the third time this season the Sun Devils (6-5-0) lost to a ranked team at home by a 1-0 score.

"The great thing about us for this season is we're playing pretty consistent soccer," coach Kevin Boyd said. "We're defending well, we're keeping the ball and we're creating an awful lot up top. We've had our ups and downs in finishing and that's what happened today."

The Sun Devils and the Toreros (9-1-2) were evenly matched for almost the entire game as neither team scored a goal in the first 88 minutes.

But in the 89th minute a handball was called on ASU senior forward Alissa Oldenkamp, which gave the Toreros a chance for a set play.

A shot from San Diego senior midfielder Leigh Ann Robinson was then deflected by ASU sophomore goalkeeper Briana Silvestri, but was put into the back of the net by San Diego freshman forward Ashleigh Shoughro.

"I didn't hang on to the ball," Silvestri said. "I would blame that goal on me. No doubt, that was my fault."

In the final minute, ASU senior defender Kyleyn Felts had a chance to force overtime, but could not convert.

ASU had numerous scoring opportunities as it fired off 19 shots compared to San Diego's six, but the Sun Devils could not capitalize.

"Their head coach is saying we should have scored four goals tonight, and I agree," Boyd said. "We should have at least had two, but instead we don't score and leave a team hanging in there."

Freshman forward Karin Volpe had five shots for the Sun Devils, while senior defender Lauren Niblett fired three shots.

"The team's frustrated because we're doing all this work and we're just not getting the results," Boyd said.
