Rebaza shines, little else goes right for ASU

The ASU men's tennis team wrapped up play before the West's ITA Regional Championships was set to end Monday, and without excuse.

Senior Juan Carlos Rebaza, the Sun Devils' top player, advanced deep in the six-day tournament, held in Malibu, Calif.

But many of his teammates were far behind him.

Rebaza defeated UCLA's Jeremy Green 6-2, 6-3 on Friday to advance into the singles round of 16. But he lost to UA rival Claudio Christen in straight sets to end his run.

Junior Wes Miller forced his way into the round of 32 Thursday after a hard-fought victory (7-5, 5-7, 6-4) over USC's Daniel Gliner. But the effort put forth may have hindered his play in the ensuing match the next day, as he lost to UCLA's Michael Look without trouble 6-3, 6-0.

ASU's top sophomore player, Matt Brooklyn, was upset Thursday and failed to make it out of the round of 64, while teammates Patrick Brogan and Murilo Souza couldn't move past their first round matches on Wednesday.

As players lost their matches in the main draw, they competed in the consolation bracket through the weekend.

In what is sure to cause practice trash-talking, Brooklyn opposed Brogan in the singles consolation bracket to advance to the quarterfinal, beating his teammate 6-0, 6-0.

The Sun Devils didn't fare much better in doubles during the weekend.

Brooklyn and Miller reached the quarterfinal together before losing 8-2 at the hands of a Pepperdine team on Friday, while ASU's two other doubles teams failed to escape their first matches.
