ASU students may soon be able to point to the West campus with a little more pride, if a Phoenix award is bestowed upon it.
The Phoenix Point of Pride is awarded to landmarks or attractions unique to the city that evoke a sense of pride within the city's residents. The university's West campus is up for the award, which is given out every four years and is voted on by the public.
The award recipient is selected by the Commission of Pride, which received essays on the locations and then selected their top ten finalists, said Marcie Colpas of Phoenix Human Services.
Steve Des Georges, director of public relations and marketing at West campus, said he nominated West campus because of his loyalty to ASU and fondness for the campus.
"I think more people need to know about West campus," he added.
The campus, located in Phoenix, has a student body population of approximately 9,000 students, Des Georges said.
The campus hosts the College of Human Services, the College of Teacher Education and Leadership, the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and the School of Global Management and Leadership.
Although the West campus is much smaller than the Tempe campus, there is still a strong sense of community surrounding the campus, Des Georges said.
"It was a lot easier to meet people on West campus," said Tulli Dobler, an interdisciplinary studies junior in political science and child development. "I met some of my best friends there."
Des Georges said students shared the sense of pride and that he can only see that pride growing in the future.
"West campus will achieve the growth that [Michael] Crow wants to see and more people will be a part of this wonderful campus," Des Georges said.
