Soon, ASU students will have the opportunity to see what happens when online chat rooms become a breeding ground for obsession, danger and fear.
Latino playwright, teacher and director Carlos Murillo knows what it's like all too well. His play, based on a true story, "Dark Play or Stories for Boys" captivates the emotional price and ramifications associated with online dating.
In his play, described as a "Hitchcock psychosexual thriller" by director Jonathan Beller, a quintessential teenage loner finds his life spiraling out of control when his adolescent angst provokes his curiosity of cyberspace. He enters a chat room, where he questions his sexual identity and fears the grim consequences of his actions.
"The play was set into motion by the main character's desire to connect with other people and be loved," said director Jonathan Beller. "It ingests the absolute need to find himself. It's about identity."
While Beller and his crew were making the play, they had to try hard not to place any judgment on the characters and instead embrace the journey they were going through, he added.
ASU theatre students Hal Ley, Hanna Leister and John Wheeler star in this theatrical thriller, produced by MainStage Theater.
The performance will be held at Lyceum Theatre, located at 901 S. Forest Mall at the ASU Tempe campus. Opening night is Feb. 22 and further performances will be held Feb. 23, and Feb. 28 through March 1 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances will be on Feb. 24 and March 2 at 2 p.m.
Ticket prices vary from $7 - $22. Tickets are buy-one, get-one free on the first Friday of any MainStage production showing. ASU faculty members get two-for-one tickets for any performance except opening night.
