Interfraternity Council President Davey Breitman, 22, resigned from the IFC Monday following his arrest Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence and aggravated assault, he said.
Breitman, a public relations junior, has served as president of the IFC since Nov. 19, 2007.
The IFC is an governing body that oversees 19 fraternities and approximately 1,000 fraternity members.
Finance junior Brent Pearlstein will act as IFC president for the time being, Breitman said.
"It was just way too time-consuming," Breitman said of his former position. "I think it's time to get more serious about my professional pursuits."
Breitman added that his arrest on Sunday on suspicion of DUI and aggravated assault played a role in his decision to resign.
"The DUI kind of served as a wake-up call to reprioritize," Breitman said.
On Sunday at 1:21 a.m., ASU Police Sgt. Mark Aston responded on foot to a fight on Alpha Drive. He was struck by a motor vehicle driven by Breitman, said ASU Police Cmdr. Jim Hardina, in an e-mail.
Aston was treated for an injury, Hardina added.
In an e-mail, Breitman said breathalyzer results were inconsistent and that a blood test will show his alcohol level was below the legal level.
He added that his lawyer and a witness to the incident believe the assault charge is "outrageous."
