Hayden Lawn draws more than 100 employers

More than 500 students looking for jobs or internships flooded Hayden Lawn Tuesday at ASU's Spring Career and Internship Fair.

Elaine Stover, associate director of Career Services, said Career Services has hosted this fair for three or four years now. However, it used to be called Super Recruiting Day and was held in the Memorial Union, she added.

"There are pros and cons to having the event out here [on Hayden Lawn]," she said. "It's quantity versus quality. We have students that aren't as prepared as other students that knew about the event, but we will also have more bodies for employers to connect with."

Finance sophomore Russell Jenkins said the career fair caught his eye after leaving a class presentation.

"Luckily, I was already dressed up," Jenkins said. "It's been pretty good; I am looking for an internship, but a lot of the employers are looking for full-time job workers. It's especially good for the upperclassmen that are finding something that might lead somewhere."

Jenkins said he was interested in the internships that Charles Schwab & Co. Inc. and Goldman, Sachs & Company offered at the fair.

Other large companies headlining the career fair included IBM, American Express, Microsoft and the Pepsi Bottling Group.

Though 155 companies were located in different booths on the lawn, more than 30 companies were placed on a waiting list, Stover said.

There might be a lack of jobs in the U.S. market right now, but that wasn't the case on Hayden Lawn, Stover said.

"We don't see that here," she said. "The employers pay money to be here, and they are all after college students. They want people with degrees."

Chad Wege, a technical recruiter from GoDaddy.com, said they have been participating in the job fair for four years.

"It's a good opportunity for students and employers to see a wide variety of people," Wege said. "This allows us to put a face to the company and explain the ins and outs of our company."
