Firefighters respond to minor Manzanita blaze

Several ASU students found themselves sharing an elevator with unlikely partners Monday afternoon when at least three firefighters responded to a small air-conditioning unit fire on the 14th floor of Manzanita Hall.

Two fire trucks, two battalion chiefs and a ladder were dispatched to the residence hall after the Tempe Fire Department received a call about smoke in a resident's room on the second-highest floor of the building, said Mike Reichling, a department spokesman.

The building was occupied at the time of the fire, at about 12:30 p.m., but no one was evacuated.

No occupants were treated for smoke inhalation or other injuries, and there was no significant damage , Reichling said.

Though the small fire, which started in the blower motor on the top of the unit, was resolved quickly, the fire department takes calls about high-rise residential buildings seriously, Reichling added.

"We have a very strong response when it comes to an occupied building like this," he said.

The firemen took the elevator down from the 14th floor after they isolated the fire and secured the area.

Rushing two fire trucks and several firefighters to the scene of a small fire was not a waste of resources, Reichling said.

"It's a lot easier to send them home than call them later for a fire," he said.
