Once old timey, then cool, then disgusting, then back to cool again, vests have certainly earned their keep.

A vest has the power to bring some pizzazz to an otherwise dull getup.

“I think they’re cute and they make a boring outfit interesting,” global studies freshman Meredith Howell says.

Vests come in all different shapes and sizes and are no longer only found at thrift stores or garage sales. A vest can really brighten a simple dress or add some zest to the classic T-shirt-and-jeans combo.

Try closed or opened vests with most outfits. Consider even doubling up for a coloring effect. The real decision is deciding between the higher, more petite, vest and the longer, lower-on-the-body look.

Lana Hockett, a design management junior, works at a local retail store in Tempe and agrees vests are making a big comeback.

“We have everything from button-up vests to just open-flap, reversible vests and then traditional, school boy full-front vests,” she says.

Hockett says vests are expected to sell very well this fall.

Of course vests don’t have to be just cute. They can also be manly.

For men, the classic sweater vest is always an option. For all other styles, play with leaving the vest open over a solid-colored shirt, or buttoned up over a collared long-sleeve.

“I see so many guys wearing vests,” Hockett says. “It’s a very metro thing to wear, and a lot of guys can pull it off well.”

In that case, be sure to set aside some student loan money for vest funds.

“People are always coming in and asking about [vests],” Hockett says.
