Legal affairs VP to move to Texas university

ASU Vice President for Administration and General Counsel Paul Ward was named vice president for legal affairs, general counsel and secretary to the Board of Trustees at Southern Methodist University Monday.

Ward, a 1975 graduate of the SMU School of Law, will begin working at his alma mater in Dallas in January 2009.

“It has been an honor to serve as the chief legal officer of ASU since June 1991,” Ward wrote in an e-mail. “I will always treasure the friendships established at ASU and in Arizona.”

As vice president of legal affairs, he will oversee three staff attorneys and select outside legal counsel to the university when needed.

As secretary to the Board of Trustees, he will work to coordinate the board’s activities.

Ward began working at ASU after working as a private practice lawyer in Washington, D.C. and as general counsel in the University of South Carolina system.

Throughout the ’90s, he served as president and member of the board of directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys.

In 2002, he was recognized at the National Conference on Law of Higher Education with the Thomas S. Biggs Award for his dedication in providing legal services to ASU and South Carolina State University.
