Researcher injured in Poly dorm fire

A grease fire broke out in a Polytechnic campus residence hall Monday, burning a visiting researcher and causing minimal damage to the room.

The fire broke out at about 12:54 p.m. Monday.

Jose Malapascua, a foreign applied biological sciences researcher, was cooking in his kitchen when the fire broke out. His face was burned, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

The Polytechnic resident was taken to the Maricopa County Medical Center’s burn unit by helicopter, ASU Police Department spokesman Chase Spradling said.

“There wasn’t much serious damage to the room; it is mainly just smoke damage,” Spradling said.
