Seniors to compete in home pool for the final time

The ASU swimming and diving teams will get one last chance to compete in front of the home crowd.

The Sun Devils face Stanford on Friday and California on Saturday in what will be their last home meets of the season.

The men (0-5) and the women (1-4) both have All-American seniors that will be saying farewell to the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

“This meet means a lot to them,” head coach Michael Chasson said. “Those four years go by fast and I don’t think it sinks in until later.”

For senior All-American diver Micky Benedetti, it will not only be his last meet at ASU, but also his last meet of the season.

Benedetti will be traveling to Rome, where he will spend two weeks preparing for the World Championships.

“I’m excited for my last meet,” Benedetti said. “Unfortunately I have to miss next week against UA, but I can’t skip out on the World Championships.”

Benedetti is on fire heading into his last meet.

The six-time All-American broke the ASU record for the three-meter springboard last weekend and is looking to carry that momentum into this weekend.

For other seniors, the farewell meet may not be as sweet.

Senior All-American Jen Beckberger may be sidelined this weekend due to a back injury.

“To think that I might not swim this weekend because of my hurt back really sucks,” Beckberger said. “I’m going to miss competing here, it’s great.”

Beckberger is the cornerstone of the women’s swim team and usually competes in two relay and two freestyle races.

“Jen is one of the best swimmers we’ve ever had at ASU,” Chasson said. “We have a lot of seniors and they are going to be hard to replace.”

Beckberger rehabbed last night and today, but whether or not she will compete is still questionable.

“I have no idea if she’ll swim,” Chasson said. “I guess we’ll find out.”
