Man injured in gang-related stabbing

Tempe police have arrested two suspects believed to be involved with a stabbing near Sun Devil Stadium on Monday night.

The male victim of the incident suffered a non-life-threatening wound to his side.

After the assailants ran away, the man attempted to flag down several cars as he moved on foot near East Rio Salado Parkway and Packard Drive, ASU police spokesman Cmdr. Jim Hardina said.

The victim made contact with a female motorist who called ASU police from her car just before 10 p.m., Hardina said.

The victim was transported to a local hospital.

The stabbing occurred in the ravine at the base of “A” Mountain, Tempe police said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

About three hours later, Tempe police located the suspect hiding on the mountain, and he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and assisting in a criminal street gang. Police also arrested a second suspect, police said.

Police believe the victim and both suspects were involved with the same criminal street gang and the motivation behind the incident was to promote the gang, according to police.

The second suspect was arrested on suspicion of threatening and intimidating and assisting in a criminal street gang.

The case is currently under investigation by the Tempe Police Department.
