Police Beat

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Sunday:

  • A 66-year-old Chandler man was arrested Wednesday morning on suspicion of cashing numerous checks belonging to his employer, according to a police report.

The man was arrested on the 800 block of East Christine Place in Chandler after a Tempe Police investigation revealed he cashed the checks, totaling $178,979.73, for personal use between Oct. 2, 2006, and Nov. 26, 2007, according to the report.

Police reported that the money belonged to Ryan’s Express, a coach, limo and luxury sedan transportation service that operates throughout the Southwest.

The man admitted to police that he stole the money and said he spent it because of a gambling addiction, police reported.

He was taken to Tempe City Jail and released pending charges, according to the report.

  • Two Mesa women, 21 and 24, were arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of armed robbery in a parking lot near South Rural Road and East Southern Avenue, according to a police report.

The two were arrested after an investigation revealed that they attacked a manager of a nearby Boston Market as he left the restaurant to make a bank deposit, according to the report.

The 24-year-old had a knife, and both women fought with the manager, eventually stealing about $1,010, police reported.

Both women were booked in Tempe City Jail, according to the report.

  • A 23-year-old Mesa woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of first-degree trespassing and criminal damage, according to a police report.

Apartment management told the woman not to enter an apartment on the 900 block of South Terrace Road, but she went in anyway, police reported.

She reportedly used a screwdriver to pry open a window and also kicked in the front door, which split the wood in the door, police reported.

During a search after her arrest, police found a pill container with many different types of pills inside, according to the report.

Three types were prescription medications, and the woman said they were old prescriptions, police reported, but she did not have any prescription bottles with her name. There was also a blue pill in the container that appeared to be Ecstasy, according to police.

The woman was taken to Tempe City Jail, released pending drugs charges and held to see a judge on trespassing and damage charges, police reported.

  • An 18-year-old transient man was arrested Thursday near West Julie Drive and South McKemy Street after an investigation revealed he was driving a stolen car, according to a police report.

When an officer witnessed the man driving the car Thursday morning, the man fled on foot, police reported.

While running, he lost his jacket and shoes, according to the report.

A police officer located the man inside a trashcan in an alleyway, police reported.

When the officer identified the man, he admitted his involvement in the stolen car and was arrested, according to the report.
