No. 8 Water polo drops close match to No. 5 Cal

The No. 8 ASU water polo team fell to No. 5 Cal on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.

The Sun Devils trailed 6-4 at halftime but managed to narrow the margin to one entering the fourth period.

ASU tied the game at nine with 5 minutes to play, but Cal pounced by scoring two unanswered goals to hand the Sun Devils an 11-9 loss.

After missing the last three games because of a concussion, senior Addison McGrath scored two goals in the loss.

Juniors Bonnie Miles and Kelly Phelps also notched two goals for the Sun Devils.

The loss dashes any postseason hopes for the Sun Devils, who are 0-6 in the MPSF.

The Sun Devils have one regular season match left on the schedule before the MPSF Championships in Honolulu.

The team heads to San Diego next weekend to play conference-rival San Diego State.
