Three former ASU track and field athletes earned a spot on Team USA for the World Championships in August after finishing near the top of the leaderboard in their respective events at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Eugene, Ore.
Dwight Phillips won the long jump with a mark of 8.57 meters to capture his fourth national crown in the event. He will now go for his fourth world title after taking the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics and the 2003 and 2005 World Championships.
Representing USA for the first time will be Kyle Alcorn, who finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:34.65. Alcorn competed for ASU from 2006-07 and was an All-American in the steeplechase his senior season.
Rounding out the Sun Devils on Team USA is Charonda Williams. She placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 22.39.
Williams, who was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships earlier this month, was the only collegiate athlete to make the final in the event.
Also making noise during the weekend was incoming freshman Anna Jelmini and redshirt freshman Jordan Clarke, who each advanced to the Junior Pan-Am meet after claiming at least one junior national title.
Jelmini won both the junior discus (53.30 meters) and junior shot put (16.15 meters), while Clarke took first in the junior shot put with a toss of 20.46 meters.
