Former coach, player inducted into hall of fame

Former ASU football coach John Cooper and former ASU offensive lineman Randall McDaniel were among the 21 former players and coaches enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame on Saturday in South Bend, Ind.

Cooper and McDaniel are the seventh and eighth Sun Devils to be enshrined in the sport’s Hall of Fame, joining former coaches Dan Devine and Frank Kush and former players Mike Haynes, John Jefferson, Ron Pritchard and Danny White.

Cooper posted a 25-9-2 record at ASU from 1985-87 and led the Sun Devils to their first Pac-10 title and Rose Bowl berth during the 1986 season.

McDaniel played at ASU from 1984-87 and was a member of that 1987 Rose Bowl team coached by Cooper. He was a two-time First-Team All-Pac-10 selection and a consensus All-American during his senior season.

Other notable players and coaches enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame on Saturday included former UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman, former Oklahoma State tailback Thurman Thomas and former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz.
