52 underage drinkers arrested at Tempe bar

Tempe police arrested 52 people Saturday on suspicion of underage drinking after the Arizona Department of Liquor Licensing and Control alerted the Tempe Police Department.

The arrests happened at Hail Mary’s, located at 1402 S. Priest Drive, just after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Sgt. Steve Carbajal, spokesman for the Tempe Police Department, said a large number of those arrested were underage ASU students, but he was unsure of the exact number.

“We’re taking a proactive approach to this problem,” Carbajal said. “We’re doing this to curb some of the crimes that are associated with alcohol consumption.”

Saturday’s arrests are in addition to the 158 alcohol-related arrests that the department’s liquor-detail team has made since the weekend of Aug. 20, he said.

“We want to get the message out that we will not tolerate this behavior in our city,” Carbajal said.
