This defense thing is weird.

ASU is still an Arizona team, right? Do they still play where the Suns play? Where the Mercury play? Even where the Cardinals play? This is all so new.

The new defensive Sun Devil football team is quite refreshing. I can’t vividly remember the last time an Arizona team was known for its defense.

Sure, the first game was played against an Idaho State team that plays in the same conference as NAU and lost to Oklahoma last week 64-0, but for the first time in a long time, the Sun Devil defense looks tough.

Last year, we watched UNLV’s 230-pound Frank Summers stomp over ASU linebackers. This year should be a different story.

Did you see the hit new freshman linebacker Vontaze Burfict put on ISU’s quarterback in the third quarter? I cringed in joy.

The Sun Devils had two sacks in the game, both by linebackers. One of the linebackers who didn’t have a sack grabbed three interceptions and ran one back for a touchdown.

For the first time I am forced to learn defensive schemes while watching my teams in the Valley.

It is quite a relief.
