This is why college football players bail on their schools early to go to the pros.

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford was projected by many to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft — that is, until he decided to return to OU for his junior season.

But why? Honestly, what else was there for Bradford to accomplish at the collegiate level?

I get that he wanted to win a national title in 2009, but Tim Tebow and the mighty Florida Gators were always still standing in the way.

And now, his decision to stay just looks like a really dumb move.

Bradford sprained his shoulder during the Sooners’ loss to BYU on Saturday, and now the reigning Heisman Trophy winner won’t be on the field for two to four weeks.

Not only will missing time affect his draft stock, but even when he does return to the field, he probably wonít be 100 percent healthy.

I applaud players who want to fulfill their commitment to the football program they signed with and want to remain loyal to the school and its fans, but sometimes the smart thing to do is take the money and run.

Bradford is now officially damaged goods, and many NFL teams won’t want to take a risk on him.
