The first postseason trip for the ASU soccer team since 2003 ended early with a heartbreaking loss to Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

With a 1-1 deadlock following a 20-minute overtime period, the game went into a penalty-kick shootout, where the Badgers outlasted the Sun Devils 4-3.

The game began with an early goal by UW sophomore midfielder Leigh Williams in the first minute of the contest.

It wasn’t until the 72nd minute that the Sun Devils were able to answer.

Freshman midfielder Aissa Sanchez scored the first goal of her career to draw ASU even.

With the score still tied at one at the end of regulation play, the Sun Devils and the Badgers moved on to the penalty-kick period.

While ASU converted on three of its kicks, UW was able to put four goals past senior goalkeeper Katie Cochran, who replaced freshman Alyssa Gillmore because of her experience in penalty-kick situations.

Junior Karin Volpe boasted eight shots on goal and junior Alexandra Elston had five, as the pair combined for 13 of the Sun Devils’ 19 shots in the game.

Gillmore made six saves in her first collegiate playoff appearance.
