So, about that perfect bracket.

Like most of you, my March Madness picks haven’t exactly gone according to plan.

I guess I was too optimistic on a few teams, such as New Mexico. That Elite Eight pick didn’t really work out.

The real killer, of course, was Kansas falling from its top spot in the tourney to ninth-seeded Northern Iowa in the second round.

But while I was watching that game on Saturday, something funny happened.

Even though I had Kansas in the Final Four, I actually started cheering for the Panthers and hoped that NIU could hold on and win.

I didn’t care that my bracket would be toast if KU lost. I realized that I would rather see upsets and buzzer-beater finishes than boring blowouts by the top seeds.

So for the rest of the tournament, I’m all about the underdog and mid-majors that are left. I’m not going to win any money in my pool anyway.

I’m not interested in a Syracuse against Kentucky championship game anymore. Sure, they are great teams, but that’s what everyone is expecting.

Let’s all hope the upsets continue and the title game on April 5 features Northern Iowa against tenth-seeded Saint Mary’s.

That would be madness.
