Five athletes from the ASU women’s swimming and diving team had the opportunity to compete at the NCAA Championships this past weekend.

ASU finished the competition in 22nd place. Florida took first place, while Stanford, California and UA finished in the next three spots, respectively.

Seniors Ashley Evans and Jamie Martinez and sophomores Jordyn Green, Rebecca Ejdervik and Elina Eggers competed at the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.

Ejdervik experienced the biggest success for the Sun Devils. In her first time competing at the NCAA Championships, Ejdervik finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.90.

Ejdervik earned All-American honors for her outstanding performance.

This NCAA Championship was the last college swimming competition for Evans and Martinez.

Evans competed in the 100-yard freestyle (50.73 seconds) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.75).

Martinez competed in the 200-yard IM, the 200-yard backstroke and the 100-yard backstroke. In the 200-yard IM, she came in with a time of 2:01.04 and in the 100-yard backstroke she clocked in at 54.38. She placed 29th in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.37.

Green had a strong performance in the 200-yard breaststroke preliminaries, clocking in at 2:11.98. Ejdervik competed in the same event, and finished with a time of 2:13.43.

The Sun Devils came in last in the 200-yard medley relay, as rival UA took first place in the event.

Eggers was the lone female diver to make the trip to West Lafayette for the competition.

This year was Eggers’s first trip to the NCAA Championships, and she competed in the 1-meter, 3-meter and 10-meter platform.

After struggling in her first two events, Eggers placed fourth overall in the 10-meter platform on Saturday with a score of 302.40 and earned All-America honors.

“I’m happy for her because she’s been struggling a little bit all week here,” ASU diving coach Mark Bradshaw said. “The fact that she got in there, and fought hard was good. Fourth place in her first NCAA [Championships] isn’t bad.”

Bradshaw said that Eggers’s dives were a little inconsistent, and that the competitive environment of the NCAA Championships was a tough adjustment for someone who had never experienced them before.

Eggers showed consistent improvement throughout the weekend.

On the first day of competition, she placed 22nd in the 1-meter.

Eggers improved on the second day, and placed 19th in the 3-meter.

“It was pretty competitive,” Bradshaw said. “The girls in front of her dove very well.”
