Connecticut beat Stanford. Big surprise.
The outcome of Tuesday night’s women’s basketball NCAA Championship was not unexpected. The Huskies have been unstoppable for the last two years. UConn went into the championship on a 77-game winning streak.
What was surprising was the game itself.
The past two years, the Huskies have won every game by double digits. They’ve taken the lead early in the game, and never looked back.
This year the Huskies were unable to stick to their usual plan. They scored a mere 12 points in the first half. They were missing shots right and left, and it didn’t help that Stanford had a perfect defensive first half.
In the second half, the Huskies managed to rally and get back to playing UConn basketball. Led by Maya Moore, UConn scored 17 of the first 19 points in the second half to get back in the game and take the lead.
Stanford played tough enough in the second half to keep the loss to single-digits.
The final score, 53-47, left the Huskies as the winners, but the game left the Huskies with a new record for the all-time lowest scoring first half in NCAA Championship history.
