Student in critical condition after dragged by vehicle

A 21-year-old ASU student was dragged by a vehicle early this morning while a man allegedly attempted to rob her purse, according to a Tempe Police Department press release.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m. on the south side of the Tempe campus near the intersection of Apache Boulevard and College Avenue.

The man grabbed the purse of Kyleigh Ann Sousa, an undergraduate communications student, and attempted to drive away in a silver Chrysler 300, according to the release.

Sousa hung onto the purse and was dragged for a short distance before the suspect fled the scene, the release said.  She was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition.

The name of the hospital is currently not being released, Tempe Police Sgt. Steve Carbajal said in an e-mail, and the investigation is ongoing.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the department at 480-350-8311 or Silent Witness 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377).
