The University of Colorado has accepted an invitation to join the Pac-10, the conference announced Thursday.
“This is an historic moment for the conference, as the Pac-10 is poised for tremendous growth,” conference commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. “The University of Colorado is a great fit for the conference both academically and athletically and we are incredibly excited to welcome Colorado to the Pac-10.”
Colorado President Bruce D. Benson said the Pac-10 is a perfect match for the university, both academically and athletically, and looks forward to a productive relationship.
Colorado could be the first of up to six teams to join the Pac-10, with numerous published reports suggesting Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Pac-10 presidents and chancellors gave Scott the go ahead to pursue expansion on Sunday.
ASU officials, at the request of the Pac-10, will not comment on potential conference expansion at this time.
The obvious reason for the conference's desire to expand is money. The Pac-10 will see it's current contract for basketball and football with Fox Sports Net run out in 2012, and could pursue its own network like the Big Ten.
