In yet another tournament filled with top talent, the ASU men’s golf team began its quest to return to elite competition at the Ping/Golfweek Preview.
The No. 9 Sun Devils traveled to Stillwater, Okla. to participate in the yearly event.
With the first round of play in the books, the Sun Devils hold ninth place in the 15-team field. ASU shot a combined team score of 307, which was good for 19 over par.
ASU coach Randy Lein fielded a lineup that included James Byrne, Spencer Fletcher, Phil Francis, Jesper Kennegard, and Scott Pinckney.
Byrne and Pinckney are knotted in a tie for 8th place after both shot 74 in the opening round. Byrne sank 15 pars and one birdie in his first round of play, while Pinckney nailed 11 pars and three birdies en route to his 74 on Sunday.
Francis got off to a bit of a rough start with six bogeys, and now sits in a tie for 34th place. Francis managed to finish the day five over par with a score of 77.
Kennegard and Fletcher look to rebound on day two after both golfers shot 82 on Sunday to land in a tie for 62nd place.
The Sun Devils will try to make a charge up the leader board on Monday when they begin the second round at 6 a.m.
