The ASU women’s basketball team outrebounded Fort Lewis 49-24 en route to a comfortable 89-56 win in an exhibition match in Tempe on Sunday afternoon.
Redshirt junior center/forward Kali Bennett led the Sun Devils scoring, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and finishing with 14 points and two assists. Redshirt senior guard Dymond Simon and redshirt junior guard Markisha Patterson both had 11 points for ASU.
The game was the first action Simon had seen since injuring her knee at the end of the 2008-2009 season.
“It was a very exciting feeling,” Simon said. “Words really can’t describe it. I’m glad we had this exhibition game today so I can get my legs under me more.”
The Sun Devils dominated the first half, outscoring the Division II Skyhawks 48-20 and racking up seven steals. In the second half, ASU’s shooting cooled off but Fort Lewis still wasn’t able to keep up despite the Skyhawks hitting 61.9 percent of their shots. ASU coach Charli Turner Thorne said she was most pleased with the team’s rebounding, and while she did say there is some work to be done, the team is ready for the season opener Friday against NAU.
Fort Lewis was led in scoring by junior forward Dana Schreibvogel, who finished with 11 points and one assist.
