Stacy Gollinger, a sophomore majoring in theater and journalism, stars in the Lyric Opera Theatre Student Workshop’s production of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” this month. While the title alone is sure to draw in a large audience, the gifted cast’s performance will make for a pleasurable viewing experience. Gollinger plays Eloise, one of the ensemble whores, in this happy-go-lucky musical.

The State Press: How did you get involved in theatre?

Stacy Gollinger: I started doing theatre after needing to quit gymnastics back in junior high.  After being diagnosed with an issue in my elbow, I wasn't allowed to play sports, so I turned to musicals.  I tried it once, I enjoyed it but it didn't stick until I moved from Florida to Minnesota.  When I moved, I was the new kid and I wanted to find a way to get involved right away, so I auditioned for “The King and I.”

SP: What would you say is your greatest strength in performing?

SG: I try to be as flexible as possible. Every production is a collaboration and a process.  It's really about going with the flow.  I try and have fun with every production I do.

SP: What is your favorite part of musical theater?

SG: I would have to say my favorite part of musical theater is the combination of acting, singing and dancing.  Nowhere else do you really get a chance to see one person do it all.

SP: Along with being a theatre major, you are also a journalism major. How does your public relations emphasis contribute to your understanding of theatre?

SG: They're both very creative positions, especially the promotions aspect of PR.  They are about communicating a message to your audience and captivating their attention.  PR studies help me to evaluate how I go about the projects I pursue which I can directly translate to the theater.

SP: What do you think makes a successful performer?

SG: I think you have to comfortable in your own skin.  You have to know who you are to be able to become someone else.

SP: Why should people come see “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”?

SG: It is a fun and light-hearted production with an amazingly talented cast.  It would be worth the time to come out and support the theatre community and it's a production sure to please.

“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” will be showing Jan. 28-29 at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 2, 4-5 at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 30 at 2 p.m., and Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $8. The performance contains adult themes and brief nudity.
