In Friday night’s season opening 8-2 win for ASU baseball, junior third baseman Riccio Torrez had a career night.
In the first inning, Torrez singled to right field, driving in the first run of the season for the No. 11 Sun Devils.
In the third, Torrez hit a soaring solo homerun to left field followed by a three-run long ball just an inning later.
“The first pitch was a hanging slider inside and the second was a low fastball that I went down and got,” he said. “I was just happy to help the team win. It’s fun when you win.”
Torrez finished his night 4-for-5 with two singles, two homeruns and career highs in both RBIs (5) and total bases (10).
His previous career highs were 4 and 7, respectively.
Opening night starter, sophomore Brady Rodgers, went five shutout innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five batters.
