How to: Work the Headscarf

Spring is right around the corner and bright silk scarves are all the rage this season. The scarf is a timeless fashion accessory, although it has always been overlooked in the fashion world. This dainty accessory is essential for any wardrobe and will come quite in handy with its versatility. A scarf could perk up even the simplest of outfits by making it more charmingly feminine, elegant and bold. Especially when you're having a messy case of bed head, there is nothing a scarf can't easily pin up and hide.

The very first step for tying almost every headscarf is to fold it into a long single strip. Simply take a corner of the scarf and fold it with the opposite corner to make a triangle. Starting from the top point of the triangle, overlap the scarf as thin as you can until it becomes that strip. In no time, you'll be tying like a pro.

The Classic Bow

Start with the middle of the scarf in the back of your head and then bring up the ends towards the front. Position the scarf to the desired place of where you want the bow. Make sure the ends are even and then tie a big bow like how you would tie your shoelaces. Tuck the leftover ends into the scarf. Pull out the corners of each side of the bow until it looks nice and neat.

The "I Love Lucy"

With this chic vintage look, begin with the middle of the scarf at the top of your head and bring the ends back down under all your hair. Instead of making a knot, cross the two ends of the scarf and then tie them back on the top of your head. There will be a short piece of each end sticking out for the washerwoman effect.

The Twisty Twists

This cool textured type of headband requires three separate scarves. Each of them should already be in a single fold. Starting at either end, you simply braid them all together. For those who cannot braid, you can use two scarves instead of three and twist them. When you finish braiding or twisting, immediately tie both ends of the headband. Wrap it around your head and knot it behind your hair.

The Gypsy Knot

The Gypsy Knot works and looks much better with your hair pulled to the side in a ponytail. Begin with the middle of the scarf barely on the top of your head and pull the ends toward your side ponytail. The next step is to tie a bow once more, but this time, leave the bow uneven and messy.

The Mini Turban

The Mini Turban is a bit more complex than the rest, but not impossible. Instead of doing the initial step of folding the scarf into a strip, just fold the scarf in half to make a triangle. Fold it once more at the bottom and then place it over your with the point of the triangle in front your head. Wrap the ends twice in front and bring them to back of your head to make a knot. Take the remaining pieces that are poking out and tuck them in the scarf.
