Sure the NFL is headed toward a lockout, but that doesn’t mean all of football is ending.

The 2011 Arena Football League season opens on Friday and the local Arizona Rattlers start theirs on Saturday against Jacksonville.

Me and the other season ticket holders (which I swear is more than 100) are pumped up.

So what if it’s lame, and so what if it’s nerdy?

Every time I bring up my season ticket holder status I get one general response: “I’m sorry.”

But don’t be, I love attending games.

I love the interaction, how close a fan can get to a player on the field.

I love the “average-Joe” feel to it, how many players work two jobs.

But I understand if you don’t feel the same way.

Arena football, like many other small, obscure sports, is trying to reinvent itself and adapt to a new sports society.

The league lasted a long time, comparatively, before it folded in 2009, but rebounding is going to be its most difficult task.

So, for me, the season starts Saturday, and I’m going to enjoy it as much as humanly possible, as in-your-face as humanly possible, because I know it might not last that much longer.
