Manny being Manny.
It’s only fitting that Manny Ramirez, one of the greatest right-handed hitters of all time, retires from baseball in the same ridiculous and inexplicable way he played the game.
Ramirez abruptly retired from baseball on Friday when he learned he would face a 100 game suspension after he had tested positive for performance enhancing drugs for the second time.
Rather than face his suspension, the former World Series MVP basically said, “Screw it, I’ll retire instead,” with his actions.
While his retirement may have been abrupt and unexpected, it was probably the right time for Manny to go.
His crazy antics and nonchalant attitude had been rubbing people the wrong way for years. Ramirez is a unique individual that people did not always understand, and what had started off as comical and entertaining had been slowly growing into annoying, frustrating and immature behavior.
In addition to Ramirez’s attitude getting annoying, his production had started to slip as well. He only recorded one hit this season in his first 17 at bats.
Everything about his spontaneous and sudden retirement seems crazy and illogical, but what else should baseball expect? This is simply Manny being Manny.
