In the event that a major sports trophy is nicked, dinged, or otherwise harmed, there is always, always a backup close by.

Usually the backup trophy isn’t needed, so no one ever knows about it.

But in Madrid on Thursday morning, Real Madrid was glad there was a spare.

After winning the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night by beating FC Barcelona 1-0, Madrid defender Sergio Ramos dropped the trophy from the top of the team bus, whereupon it was promptly run over and crushed into 10 different pieces.

Ramos tried to say the trophy was fine on Twitter, but video from the Associated Press soon surfaced that clearly showed the trophy being smashed.

It was quite honestly the funniest thing I’ve seen all year.

I’ve seen a lot of championships over the years, but I’ve never seen anyone completely destroy a trophy. Not even the Stanley Cup, which weighs 35 pounds and is passed around to every single member of the team, even though they’re all on ice.

I realize that Ramos plays for one of the best teams in the world, and just won a world cup with Spain.

But you have to take care of your silverware.
