(In response to Tanner Greene’s July 11 column, “Minnesota a microcosm of GOP stubbornness.”)
In 2003 Minnesota state budget was $37.6 billion, by 2005 it went up to $43 billion, 2007 it was $47 billion, 2008, $51 billion. Meanwhile the state debt has increased from $27 billion to $42 billion.
What is stubborn is that in these depressed economic times the Democrats cannot see that (the idea) “tax and spend” has hit the wall.

You lost this debate on your second sentence.
Claiming that there isn’t a passionate following for soccer is out of touch with what has already happened, and if you’re going to make a successful attempt to predict the future, the bare minimum requirement is to be able to accurately describe the present.

Soccer does have a Gretzky-esque player. His name is Landon Donovan and he plays for both the Los Angeles Galaxy and the U.S. National Team. His goals are highly anticipated at every game he plays and they are all beautifully executed.
If any soccer player has the ability to bring a stronger American fan base, it’s Donovan.
