Letters to the editor: July 11

In response to William Boor’s column July 5 column, “Soccer will never be popular in the United States.”

I commend you on your style and the passion behind your words. But you can’t just accuse soccer of being a boring sport hated by all Americans. As a soccer player, a big fan of the sport and an American, I can tell you point blank that a great number of Americans do enjoy the sport and find it to be every bit as exciting as football and baseball, and some would argue that it’s even more exciting. Also, not every game is allowed to end in a tie–championship games have to end with a winner, determined by an extra half or penalty kicks.

I will not argue that it is an unpopular sport in the United States as a whole. In fact, I wrote a very similar article to this one for my high school magazine a couple years ago. The difference between my article and yours is that mine was well researched and was actually about its unpopular nature in the United States as opposed to my personal opinion on the sport.

Once again, noble effort and beautiful writing. Just try to get your facts straight next time instead of allowing yourself to be driven completely by passion.
