The ASU Police Department launched two social media accounts last week to better connect with the University community.

The department’s new Facebook and Twitter pages went public on Aug. 15 and 16, respectively. As of Monday afternoon, the Facebook page had 283 “likes” and the Twitter account had 20 “followers.”

ASU Police Cmdr. Jim Hardina said the sites could be used as a way for parents, students and staff to communicate with the department on issues related to public safety on campus.

“We will be using it to keep the community updated on campus crime, public safety information, breaking news and crime prevention tips as well as news about the ASU Police Department,” Hardina said of the department’s Facebook page.

He added the Twitter page would be used for the same purposes.

“We are hoping to get students and their parents to follow us, as well as faculty and staff,” Hardina said.

The Tempe Police Department launched its Twitter account in May and uses the website to update the community on breaking news as well as public safety information.

“It’s been a great way to communicate with people in a timely fashion,” Tempe Police Sgt. Steve Carbajal said,

As of Monday afternoon, Tempe Police had 421 “followers” — a number Carbajal said he hopes to increase.

Carbajal said students should check out the department’s Twitter page in order to know where the police are or what the police will be doing.

The departments’ Twitter handles are @ASUPolice and @TempePolice. The University police’s Facebook page is Arizona State University Police Department.
