I nearly cried when I heard that ASU baseball was banned from the 2011 postseason and could be under probation until 2014.

I love baseball and had been looking forward to cheering the Sun Devils on to meaningful victories during my time at ASU.

The NCAA clamped down on ASU due to violations made under former coach Pat Murphy.

In an effort to self-reprimand, ASU also vacated earlier wins and cut two scholarships.

It’s a familiar story. College sports managers take the wrong paths to make their team better, and then when they’re caught, their players are the ones who suffer.

Everywhere you turn another college athletics program is being suspended or fined, often due to the actions of a coach or another official.

What bothers me the most is that when a coach gets fined, or even fired, he’ll be fine. But when a player gets his scholarship cut, it could be life and career changing.

I understand that there should be rules to govern college sports, but these rules should be designed in the athletes’ best interests.

It’s their futures we care about.
