Shootings, brawls, beatings: three words not usually associated with preseason football.

All three took place in the Bay Area last week during last Saturday’s annual Raiders vs. 49ers Battle by the Bay, which is a yearly matchup between the cross-town rivals.

According to the Associated Press, two victims were shot while another was beaten unconscious. That same report stated that 70 or more people were thrown out of Candlestick Park during the game.

All of this occurred during a preseason game, a game that doesn’t even count.

The rivalry between Bay Area teams is quite intense. That’s understandable.

Both organizations have rich histories. Once upon a time, a very long time ago, Oakland was actually successful on the gridiron. This was well before the JaMarcus Russell and Jason Campbell days.

In San Francisco, Joe Montana and Steve Young once led the 49ers to countless victories. Things have sure changed on the football field, but apparently the fans’ passion hasn’t waned one bit.

But this time it’s gone too far. Shootings, severe beatings, and excessive violence are all unacceptable.  There’s a clear difference between being a passionate fan and being a stupid one.

Following last Saturday’s game, San Francisco CEO Jed York suggested that this yearly matchup be put on hold. After this violent fiasco, it definitely should be.
