Police Beat: Aug. 18


Tempe Police reported the following incidents Wednesday:

 

  • A 25-year-old Mesa man was arrested at Five Guys Burgers and Fries early Wednesday morning on suspicion of trespassing and entering the restaurant to take two paper bags of peanuts, police reported.Tempe Police watched as the man walked in the unlocked restaurant while an employee was taking out the trash and witnessed the man go for the peanuts then leave without paying for them, according to a police report.Police detained the man while walking out, and he began pleading his case.“I walked in here, I love Five Guys, I wanted peanuts and was going to invite my friends for free peanuts,” the man told police, according to a report.

    It was discovered that the man had a useable amount of marijuana concealed in two cigarette rolled joints after a police search, police reported.

    The man was taken to Tempe City Jail and booked on suspicion of second degree criminal trespassing and marijuana possession, according to a report.

  • A 27-year-old Mesa man was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of aggravated DUI at the Circle K on the 2100 block of East Apache Boulevard, police reported. The man’s license was already suspended when police attempted to pull him over, and he fled in the vehicle from the 1900 block of University Drive to the Circle K, according to a police report. The man crashed into a block wall fence at the convenience store, police reported. The police apprehended the man and could smell alcohol on his breath and see that he had bloodshot eyes. The man failed field sobriety tests and blew a .189 and .183 during breathalyzer tests, according to a report.
  • A 20-year-old Phoenix man was arrested on Saturday outside Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital on suspicion of aggravated assault of a police officer, police reported.The policeman responded to an altercation between the man and his girlfriend outside of the hospital. The girlfriend had taken the man to the hospital for a cut on his hand when the man refused to go in, according to a police report.The officer approached the man who was sitting down on a bench when the man stood up in a confrontational manner, police reported.The man clenched his fists to strike when the man was told to sit back down by the officer, then the officer secured the man before being spit on.  The officer put the man on the ground but he then continued to spit at and kick the officer.   Another officer came to help subdue the man and keep him from kicking, according to a report.

    The man refused to give his information to the police officers while continuously yelling obscenities and threatening the original officer’s wife and family, police reported.

    “East Side,” the man shouted and that he had ties to gangs from Milwaukee, Wis., according to a report.

  • A 50-year-old transient man was arrested in the early evening on Saturday at the light rail station on South Mill Avenue on suspicion of aggravated assault, police reported.The man walked into the Starbucks on the 400 block of South Mill Avenue where he approached the counter yelling at the baristas, according to a police report.Customers began to leave, when the man decided to follow suit. When the man was leaving he began striking a man on the shoulder with an open hand, bruising the customer, police reported.The man fled on foot but was apprehended at the Metro Light Rail by police. The man then spit on the officer’s leg after asking the police what he was being charged with, according to a report.
