DVDs that make great holiday stocking stuffers

The ominously titled, most chaotic sales event of the year — and during our time of Thanksgiving, no less — is coming, whether we like it or not. The workers might wish they were home with their families, but far too many more would rather be away from theirs. The day we all know as Black Friday will soon be upon us.

For those who decide to turn their backs on family and camp out for days on end to trample complete strangers for the larger flat screen televisions at Walmart, deals will undoubtedly be had.

However, for those who appreciate the smaller things in life, like the simplicity of stocking stuffers, rest easy this holiday weekend. There are a number of upcoming and already released DVDs worth considering as minor gifts. There’s no need to feel rushed. Sleep in on Friday. Maybe even have another slice of pumpkin pie.

Of the movies already released to DVD, and highly recommended for that special someone who loves a good flick, “Fast Five” and “Thor” are easy crowd pleasers.

Having fooled everyone into thinking that a film series about really fast cars — and starring Paul Walker — couldn’t last more than two, maybe three feature films before feeling like a tune-up was necessary, director Justin Lin gave us “Fast Five.” The film once again proves that there is still plenty in the tank for a high-octane thrill ride with Toretto and O’Conner, and who is going to say no to “Thor?”

Also available for the television junkie is season one of “Workaholics.” With season two currently underway, relive the hilarity that these three friends experience and endure after graduating college as they realize that the real world requires real work — and that it really isn’t all that fun.

One of the best available titles right now is 2009’s “Winnebago Man.” It’s what you might imagine: a documentary about a former Winnebago salesman. Any self-describing surveyor of Youtube.com is familiar with the man Jack Rebney, but to everyone else he is a mystery worth exploring. Don’t Google it — buy it.

You’ll have to wait until Dec. 6 before satisfying the curiosity of whomever you are shopping for with “The Hangover Part II” and “Cowboys and Indians.” “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” isn’t slated for release until Dec. 13 along with “Spin City: The Complete Sixth Season.”

“Midnight in Paris” was a cute, critically acclaimed film that releases on Dec. 20. You can also give a gift card for those who are a bit

more daring and celebrate the new year with “Apollo 18” and “Archer: Season 2,” both released on Dec. 27.

Whether you come from the one percent or the 99 percent and whether your gift is too big or small, expensive or not, just remember that the holidays are about appreciating the finer things in life. For some, it might be a DVD. For others, simple camaraderie and companionship will do.
