The sense of honesty in Anthony Green’s newest solo album, “Beautiful Things” is apparent from the first track “If I Don’t Sing.” In the song, Green confesses that he will “always be unhappy” if he does not sing. Though the lyrics are seemingly plain, it is the simplicity of the genuine songs in Green’s album that makes this record a success.
The former Circa Survive and Saosin singer dabbles with new sounds in his second solo album. Folksy tracks, such as “Blood Song” (inspired by the 2007 film “There Will be Blood”) and the bonus track “Can’t be Satisfied” featuring Ida Maria, show that the songwriter has come a long way since Saosin. He also experiments with a synth-driven sound in the song “When I’m On Pills.”
Continuing the sentimental quality of the songs, Green writes endearing songs for his son. “James’ Song” and “Lullaby” show a side of him that fans do not usually see.
Green’s versatile voice allows him to pull off a unique sound. From folk sounds to rock riffs in songs such as “Can’t Have it all at Once,” Green manages to make his distinct voice work for the different styles he takes on.
The optimism heard in “Do it Right” is inspiring, and it appears Green has learned a few things about life and music. His wisdom pours into the track in a simple way that the listener can connect with.
A common thread of authenticity runs through Green’s solo effort, which gives the album more appeal than would be expected.
Green does not take himself too seriously this time around. The refreshing album will not leave listeners awe-struck, but it also will not leave them scratching their heads in confusion. It is not an intricate body of work, but that is exactly what makes the album a beautiful thing.
Fans of the artist will be excited to hear that Green will be performing Feb. 6 at The Clubhouse Music Venue in Tempe. Doors will open at 7 p.m.
