Sure, I know the Super Bowl is Sunday, but I’m excited about baseball.
Why? Three reasons:
1. The Seattle Mariners play the Oakland Athletics and spring training begins on Mar. 2.
The long winter filled with disappointing Cardinals football and nearly non-existent basketball will finally be over, and the sound of bats cracking and fans singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” will begin.
2. Baseball is the one game that encompasses the best of athletics.
There is disciplined, awe-inspiring skill in a variety of shapes and sizes — literally.
Baseball is one of the few sports in which the physiques of Craig Counsell, Joba “The Gut” Chamberlain and everywhere in between can succeed.
3. The experience. Baseball is family, fun and tradition oriented.
Going out to a ballgame is like continuing a family legacy. It isn’t just about you; it’s about everyone who has ever been a baseball fan.
It’s “good clean fun,” but not in a patronizing way. Even people who aren’t baseball-crazy can enjoy watching a game.
So, enjoy Super Bowl Sunday to the fullest, but afterward, be ready to join me in welcoming baseball back.
