It’s sad it had to come to this.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Tuesday the Indianapolis Colts are expected to part ways with quarterback Peyton Manning.

Although I was in diapers when Joe Montana’s run with the San Francisco 49ers came to an end and was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, I’ve always heard stories about how unusual it looked to see one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time in another uniform.

We’ve recently seen the evolution of Brett Favre’s career when it finally ended with stints as a New York Jet and Minnesota Viking, despite his glory days with the Green Bay Packers.

It’ll be the same with Manning. Whatever team he eventually plays with next season — even if it’s with the Arizona Cardinals — it just won’t be the same.

Manning built the Colts to such a level of success where it was difficult to recall their last losing season without looking it up (2001). He’s one of the best to play the position.

While it is a business and you can’t blame the Colts, given Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are available with the No. 1 pick, hopefully this motivates Manning to return to the elite level he played at prior to his neck injury.

As strange as Manning may look wearing something other than blue and white, how can you root against a Manning comeback?
